Property in Portugal has been popular among sun lovers, golf players and pensioners. Furthermore, Portugal is one of the cheapest countries in the European Union and that has not escaped the attention of Europeans.

Living in Portugal

The huge coastal area of Portugal attracts a lot of tourists throughout the year. The Algarve is especially  popular among second home owners because of its beautiful beaches and numerous golf courses. Two thirds of the property in Algarve is owned by foreigners.

Would you rather enjoy a glass of wine than take a swing at a golf ball? Then Portugal is the place for you, too. The region of Alentejo is characterised by extensive vineyards where some of the most delicious wines are produced. The famous port wine is not produced here, but in the north of Portugal. This area is very popular among the Portuguese themselves and does not have a lot of tourism.

Overseas buyers looking for a second home are more and more attracted to Portugal. The number of people who decide to emigrate to Portugal has also increased. Especially pensioners take the plunge and decide to move to the country with a staggering 220 days of sunshine, cultural and historical treasure and breathtaking scenery.

The property market in Portugal

House prices in Portugal have not increased a lot in the last few years, contrary to those in other European countries. One of the reasons is the huge number of houses that has been built in Portugal recently. Therefore, properties in Portugal have remained very affordable according to European standards. In the Algarve, however, house prices are slightly higher and tend to increase more rapidly than in the rest of the country. But at the moment there is an overall drop in prices in Portugal that is more noticeable in prices for apartments than houses.
